Product Description

Develop your sea kayaking skills in the magnificent Gippsland region

Tuesday 30th April - Friday 3rd May 2019

Develop your sea kayaking skills in enclosed sea environments on the beautiful Gippsland region. Spend 5 days camped with us and experience some of the best paddling locations in southern and eastern Victoria. For only $395 for 4 days' tuition this is a great bargain (minimum and maximum numbers apply).

Possible locations are weather dependant and may include, but are not limited to:

  • Gippsland Lakes or
  • Nooramunga National Park (Port Welshpool/Port Albert - Snake Island) or
  • Lake Tyers

In 2018 we paddled from Lake Wellington and finished in Paynesville, crossing Lake Victoria twice. This year we will start in Lake Victoria - probably either in the vicinity of Paynesville or Loch Sport / Emu Bight area and explore down into Bunga Arm for a more remote camping experience. As always, our programs are weather dependant - our route will be determined in the days leading up to this event and may be adjusted through the course of the journey to fit with the forecast weather.

We will develop your skills, knowledge and experiences of:

  • Navigation and route planning to compensate weather conditions and tidal influence (where applicable)
  • Weather interpretation
  • Safety equipment for day and overnight paddling
  • Planning a kayaking adventure: expedition gear, kayak outfitting, waterproofing and packing a kayak
  • Understanding the clothing, equipment and provisions used in sea kayak expeditions
  • Camp cooking - recipes, menu planning, fresh / preserved foods, portable stoves, dehydrating
  • Developing kayak camping skills - utilizing principles of minimum impact camping and using tarpaulins to provide shelters in sun or rain - tarpology and knots
  • Developing leadership skills for group management.
  • Paddling skills - including kayak control
  • Rolling and self-rescues
  • Towing and managing rescue situations
Meet: 8.30am, location to be confirmed, somewhere in southern Gippsland. Location will firm up in week prior to the programme.
The program will conclude around lunchtime on the Friday.

Cost: $395 for 4 days tuition
If you require kayak hire - available at discounted rate $150 for the 4 days.

Minimum numbers: 4 participants

Prerequisites: Completion of our Sea Starter Course or equivalent experience.

Accommodation: Stay tuned! Weather dependant - will be a mixture of commercial camp grounds and National Parks (cost not included). National Parks campsites in the Gippsland Lakes National Park have drop toilets and in most cases tables and bench seats and fireplaces.

Equipment: Participants will need to bring their own kayak and personal kayaking equipment, dry bags, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, rain jacket, rain pants, change of clothes, cooking and eating equipment and 2 person tent. Hire of kayaks and camping equipment can be arranged at extra cost.

We will send you a more comprehensive gear list upon registration.

Food: BYO food. We can offer some menu suggestions. Bring food with you as there will probably not be any opportunity to shop once we start our journey.

  1. Gippland lakes kayak trip 5 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Apr 2018

This was my second multi-day kayak excursion with east coast kayaking and has confirmed my opinion that there is simply no better, more cost effective, fun, challenging, confidence inspiring way to learn this fantastic pastime than under the guidance of Raia and Rohan. Their combined experience and expertise is evident in every aspect of the trip. They just hit the perfect balance of theory, demonstration and practice that will get you thinking like a mariner. That is: someone who can safely assess weather, tide, environment, temperament(!) equipment, skill level and come up with a plan A, B, and C to meet the needs of the moment AND have a wonderful time balancing all of these challenges. Can't recommend East Coast Kayaking highly enough. And I can't wait for the next trip!

  2. Best way to iron out any kinks and learn new stuff. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Apr 2018

These five dayers are the best trips, It's all hands on as Rohan teaches you how to load and unload for expedition kayaking. Plus we all pitch in to decide on our next best course of destination, and how best to paddle there by pouring over the map and taking in wind and weather predictions. Rohan explains everything and is always happy to repeat something if requested. The nights are filled with stars and the dawns are amazing. I've done two of these trips now because they refresh my confidence and ability.

  3. Paddle Gippsland 4 Star Review

My wife and I attended this course over a week with Rohan. The benefit of the course is having access to Rohan and his expertise over 5 days and having 3 nights out camping and becoming efficient at packing and unpacking kayaks. The actual paddling experience will be dependent on the weakest paddler(s) in the group which can be frustrating for stronger paddlers, but this should not be a deal breaker because the course is a lot more than just about paddling. Completing the course should enable you to plan your own trips with confidence.
