Product Description

Begin your Bass Strait Expedition planning with our 5 Day Course and gain skills to plan and paddle your own Expedition

The first two days, which take place at our training centre, are the equivalent of our Learn to Kayak - Sea Starter Course, but tailored to the expedition. If you have completed a weekend or Private one day Learn to Kayak - Sea Starter Course you can choose to do the 3 days only, but we recommend discussing this with us first.

We recommend you have your own kayak and equipment for this course as you will be best learning in the gear you plan on taking, but it is not expected that you will be fully geared up at this stage. Advice on gear and outfitting is available as part of the course.

In addition, participants will need to bring their own personal equipment, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, rain jacket, rain pants, and 2 person tent. Hire of camping equipment is available if you do not yet have this gear.

You will learn & develop through:

  • Consolidating basic kayaking skills and building your confidence and expertise
  • Planning a kayaking adventure; knowledge of waterproofing equipment, loading a sea kayak,
  • Understanding the clothing, equipment and provisions used in sea kayak expeditions
  • Understanding the principles of food preparation, menu planning and using portable stoves.
  • Developing kayak camping skills - utilising principles of minimum impact camping
  • Route planning to compensate for tidal influence and weather conditions
  • Negotiating protruding land masses, constrictions, shipping channels, effects of wind, tide ferry gliding and negotiating surf zones (weather dependent)
  • Developing leadership skills for group management.
