We provide safe, professionally managed and adventure-based kayaking programs that can support Outdoor Education, Physical Education, Environmental Studies, Geography, VCE/VCAA curriculum outcomes and co-curricular programs.

Our programs can range from a 1–2 hour introductory kayaking session through to full-day journeys, multi-day expeditions and extended sea kayaking programs.

We work with schools to design programs around their students, learning objectives, experience and the environment in which they are paddling.

Sea Kayaking for Schools

Sea kayaking provides an engaging outdoor learning environment where students can develop confidence, communication, teamwork, leadership, decision-making and practical water skills.

Depending on the program, students can learn about:

Melbourne School Kayaking Programs

Our Training Centre at 37 Jetty Road, Sandringham VIC 3191 is located on the waterfront at Sandringham Harbour, providing access to the sheltered waters of Port Phillip Bay.

The location provides a convenient venue for Melbourne school kayaking programs, Outdoor Education classes, Physical Education activities and short school excursions.

We can also operate from school camps and other locations throughout Victoria, allowing schools to incorporate kayaking into existing outdoor education programs and extended journeys.

Kayaking Program Locations

Depending on the program, season and conditions, we operate in a range of environments including:

We select locations and activities according to the requirements of the group, environmental conditions, student experience and program objectives.

Sit on Top Programs

Sit-on-Top Kayaking Programs

Our sit-on-top kayaking programs provide an accessible introduction to kayaking and are particularly suitable for school Physical Education, Outdoor Education and co-curricular programs.

Sessions can be designed for approximately 1–3 hours or longer, depending on the school's timetable and objectives.

Kayaking can also be combined with Adventure Based Learning activities, providing opportunities for students to develop communication, cooperation, problem-solving and leadership skills while learning practical water skills.

Programs can be delivered as a single session or a series of sessions, allowing students to progressively develop their kayaking skills and confidence.

Half-Day & Full-Day Kayaking Journeys

Half-day and full-day kayaking journeys provide additional time for students to explore the environment and connect their kayaking experience with curriculum and outdoor education outcomes.

For example, a Yarra River kayaking journey can provide opportunities to explore the history, geography, development and changing land use of Melbourne's major urban waterway.

Sea kayaking on Port Phillip Bay can provide opportunities to explore marine environments, coastal geography, weather, tides, navigation and water safety.

Programs can be designed around the school's existing Outdoor Education, Geography, Environmental Studies or Physical Education objectives.

Multi-Day Kayaking Expeditions

Our multi-day kayaking programs provide students with opportunities to develop teamwork, leadership, resilience, decision-making and expedition skills in natural environments.

We can assist schools with programs of approximately 2–5 days in locations including:

• Westernport
• Geelong
• Port Phillip Bay
• Gippsland Lakes
• Nooramunga

Programs can incorporate kayaking, camping, navigation, environmental studies, leadership and group-management skills.

We can also provide advice and support with camping equipment, catering, logistics, preparation and pre-trip training.

For experienced groups and suitable school programs, we can provide longer expeditions further afield, including 7–10 day sea kayaking expeditions in the Whitsundays and Alaska. These programs require extensive preparation, so we provide appropriate training and pre-expedition support.

Student & Staff Pre-Trip Briefings

For overnight and multi-day programs, we can provide student and staff briefings at school before the excursion.

Briefings can cover:

• Kayaking equipment and clothing
• What students need to bring
• Weather and environmental conditions
• Tides and water conditions
• Marine and water safety
• Camping equipment and campcraft
• Expectations and group responsibilities
• Preparation for the kayaking journey

These briefings help students and staff understand the requirements of the program before they arrive.

We also provide kayaking information and instructional resources through our YouTube channel.

Teacher Training & Professional Development

We support teachers and school staff to develop their own kayaking knowledge and skills.

As part of our school partnerships, participating school staff may be able to access introductory kayaking training, depending on the program.

Training can provide teachers with practical experience in kayaking, safety, equipment and paddling skills and may contribute towards relevant Paddle Australia qualifications or awards, subject to the applicable course and assessment requirements.

We can also discuss teacher professional development and VIT-related professional learning opportunities for schools seeking to build staff capability in outdoor education and kayaking.

Safety, Standards & Risk Management

Safety and appropriate risk management are central to all of our school programs.

Our programs are developed with reference to relevant Paddle Australia standards, Victorian Department of Education requirements, Transport Safety Victoria guidance and Australian Adventure Activity Standards, as applicable to the activity and operating environment.

We assess the conditions, location, participant experience, equipment and activity requirements when planning each program.

East Coast Kayaking is also a licensed tour operator with Parks Victoria for applicable activities and locations.
