Keeleazy - Protecting Beautiful Bottoms Worldwide

KeelEazy is a self-adhesive (peel and stick) strip that provides an extremely durable surface anywhere that abrasion is a concern. Ideally suited for the keel of kayaks, it is also used on boats, canoes, jet skis, car doors, etc.

KeelEazy Strips are easily applied to fibreglass, polyethylene, thermoformed ABS and metal surfaces and can be moulded over compound curves with the use of a heat gun. We stock this 3/32” PVC material  in 2”, 3" &  4” widths.

We stock black, white, red, yellow, blue and orange, Keeleazy 2" is available in lengths by the metre.
The 3" & 4” tape is available for wider craft in either black or white only (separate listing). Sea Kayaks & skis (narrow keel line) generally use 2".

Keeleazy - Original

Suitable for any type of kayak construction.

ABS, Polyethylene, Thermoform, varnish
Composite - fibreglass, carbon, kevlar etc

Suitable for any type of kayak construction and can be moulded around curved hulls with the use of a heat gun. For very sharp bends you may find it better to cut some small darts in the edges

[There is also a Keeleazy tape with adhesive that is only suitable  for composite kayaks  - it does not adhere well to plastic or ABS kayaks. It is also a stiffer tape and it does not bend around curvy hulls as well as the Original so we recommend the original Keeleazy if you have a curvy surface. If you particularly want this version of Keeleazy contact us as we have some on Black - but generally we recommend using the Original on any type of kayak.]

What length to buy:

KeelEazy can be applied full length (recommended) or on specific wear spots.

Select the length you require for your kayak - remember you need to curve it around the hull -  allow about another 20-30cm above the length of your kayak - will depend how high up the bow you want to fit it (and whether it is a traditional bow or vertical bow).

We recommend laying out the tape along the keel line before removing the protective strip, in order to get the best position. Any left overs can be used for patching or on your deck (eg. under the edge of your spare paddle).

For other lengths select our per metre listing and indicate the number of metres required in the Quantity box (will come in one piece).

You can also just get a metre or two (or three...) to cover areas of concern, but we recommend that the leading edge not be in a position where friction with sand running up the beach will work on the edge & peel it back.

KeelEazy Application Instructions – Apply at Room Temperature – approximately 21 C  (instructopn sheet included in the pack)

  1. You will need:
    • Heat gun or hairdryer
    • Isopropyl alcohol (provided in the kits)
    • Leather glove
    • Scissors (to cut it shorter or round the edges)
    • Exacto knife or razor blade to cut around skeg (when necessary)
  2. Prepare the surface: Repair any cracks or holes prior to installing. If there are deep gauges, lightly sand the surface to smooth it out. Clean the area where the KeelEazy is to be adhered well with Isopropyl alcohol. This is extremely important!
  3. Round the corners: Use a scissors to round off the corners and the ends of the strip. If you purchased a kit, this has already been done for you.
  4. Separate the blue backing strip from the adhesive. This is probably the most difficult part of the installation. Be sure and leave the adhesive on the KeelEazy and remove the blue backing tape only. Use a razor blade if necessary.
  5. Apply the strip onto the hull: Once one end is firmly attached you can stretch the strip slightly, being sure to center over the keel. You can cut the KeelEazy with a scissors if the strip is too long for your boat. Then go over the strip with a hair dryer or hot air gun on a low setting to press out any wrinkles. Start in the middle and move out to each end. Also start at the apex of the keel and push outwards to avoid air bubbles or wrinkles. Using a squeegee or roller can help to smooth out any bubbles. Use a low setting. Do not overheat.
  6. To remove or reset: Simply heat the strip up using low heat and lift it off.
  7. Acute angles and corners: To go around a sharp corner, you may need to make a notch or scallop at the apex of the corner to go around the corner. If you make a flap, be sure the leading edge goes over the other so that it won’t catch when moving your boat.

  1. In a class of its own 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Jan 2016

A friend who recently helped me install KeelEazy said "this stuff is in a class of its own" and I think that is a pretty accurate assessment.

I've seen people trying out all sorts of cheaper options like duck tape, gaffer tape etc, and none of them were particularly successful.

KeelEazy is considerably more expensive, but I think if you have spent a lot of money on a kayak that you want to protect, it's worth the extra money to do the job right the first time.

Not cheap but seems to give good protection. Easily put on with heat gun.

  3. KeelEazy Hull Tape 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Nov 2015

This is the second lot of KeelEazy Hull Tape I have bought as I have just purchased another kayak. KeelEazy is very easy to apply and offers good protection against accidental damage to the bottom of the boat. I have also found that the tape has improved straight line tracking of the kayaks, which has been a bonus. I highly recommend this product.

  4. ok product 5 Star Review

the tape does the job. the tape I received was in perfect condition not like a previous purchase which was full of air filled wrinkles and didn't all come out with the heat gun but the tape is still on my kayak ok

  5. Saves my bottom! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Sep 2015

Treated myself to a Hobie Revo11 3 years ago, bought Keel Easy after the first month of use, as I notice concrete ramps and plastic do not really like each other.
Found the first application a little daunting, but improved with the patch-ups over the last couple of years, and now have just applied a completely new full strip and not 1 crease, the bow and stern are perfect.
Underside of yak is still pristine, just a few marks on the bow and stern areas, where I had not 'patched' immediately I noticed a 'wear thru'
Pay big money for a yak, so prevention is the way to go - Keel Easy is worth the $,s.

PS Lady yakker of Very Advanced Age, so if I can do, so can you...lol

  6. Worth every cent! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 19th Aug 2015

I just installed KeelEazy on my brand new Malibu X-Factor and and very pleased with how it came out. Using the heat gun it molds to the hull very nicely. Except when the keel is just millimeters slimmer than the tape. It doesn't conform when there isn't enough to stick it down. But it does mold to every other section and looks damn good afterwards.
The alcohol wipe began to dry out about halfway along the keel of my 4.4m kayak but aside from that the product is brilliant. Nice thick layer to avoid scratches when I beach it or fish over mudflats. Yet to test but I know I will be impressed. Thanks. Cheers for the ChuppaChup too, made my day!

  7. Keeleazy tape 4 Star Review

Posted by on 5th Apr 2015

It went on easy and time will tell how well it works and sticks.
Contrary to the video on youtube, the glue goes right to the edge of the tape.
You will need to wipe around the edge with turps or acetone after it is applied to stop sand sticking on the edge.
I put it on a Stealth Evo which has a square bow and after trimming it down to 30 mm it went around the near right angle without much fuss.
